.ADVISORYCOMIMITEE AND SUPERVISORY

The Ph.D. students should be directed by a qualifiedmajor supervisor (Ph.D. graduate faculty), as well as a committee panelcontaining several qualified co-advisors/committee members. The initiatedadvisory committee consists of at least four members of the graduate faculty, including the major advisor, who acts as the chair. At least two of thecommittee members must come from the School of the Environment and SafetyEngineering, with at least one of them being a full time position to serve asthe graduate faculty at JU. The remaining two members may come from School of theEnvironment and Safety Engineering or from other colleges at JU (at least one withthe full time position to serve as the Graduate Faculty at JU). If a studentdeclares a minor, one of the committee members must be invited from the declaredminor department/college. In general, the committee panel should be establishedby end of the second semester in a student’s graduate career.

VII. OTHERISSUES AND REQUIREMENTS

All graduatestudents are required to initiate their dissertation study project prior to endof the second semester. The medium-term examination for dissertation project isgenerally scheduled in the fourth semester. Other following schedules relevantto your graduate study could be found from the Overseas Education College (OEC)at JU. By end of the first year, students are required to have a researchproposal and program of study accepted by his/her Graduate Advisory Committee.A list of completed courses taken in other accredited universities and those tobe proposed for PhD grogram should also be prepared before the first committeemeeting. A meeting of the advisory committee should be scheduled by the studentto discuss his/her proposal and course work.

Every graduate student is required to publish scientificpapers in the relevant field prior to being eligible to apply a dissertationdefense. The published academic papers and research achievements should meetother university’s requirements < apply for degree ofjiangsuuniversity graduate student academic papers published during the period of learning>. The dissertation mustdemonstrate a mastery of research innovation, ability to perform original andindependent research, and skills in formulating conclusions that enlarge uponor modify accepted ideas.

VIII. FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE

Applicants from a foreign country can apply a varietyof Chinese central government/ local government, and other sources of the scholarshipsthat may fully or partially support your degree study at JU. For furtherinformation regarding these scholarships provided by Chinese government and JU,you can surf on the website of OEC, JU, at http://oec.ujs.edu.cn/pub/eng/Scholarship/GS/.In addition to these funding resources, your advisor from School of theEnvironment and Safety Engineering at JU may potentially have a financialassistance for each enrolled graduate student upon funding availability andyour research performance.

IX. DISSERTATIONRESEARCH

The level of the quality of doctoral thesis is acomprehensive measure of doctoral training quality received from JU and its relevantacademic standards being established at JU. Dissertation research project canbe a basic, applied basic, or an applied engineering project, which should mainlyfocus on one of the frontier disciplines or an importantscientific/technological challenge that would significantly contribute to eitheracademic or industrial advances with its new concepts/theories/methods, as wellas its novel technologies. Students are generally required to participate insolving a major theoretical or technological problem, and, as the best, willdeeply involve in an important research grant that is currently undertaken by yoursupervisor. The thesis should indicate a matter of fact that the student has beenwell trained in the relevant disciplines and contribute significantly either inscience or in industrial application. Dissertation should be completed by a studentto demonstrate his/her capability to conduct a scientific research project independently. As for the details, please see the OEC website related to some importantrequirements of your dissertation development, submission, defense, as well asits approval procedures.
